Andrea Ray

I started my studies as a PhD Fellow in Fine Arts at the Malmö Art Academy in September 2013. Working at the intersection of pre-recorded and real-time experience, I create environments with sculpture, light and architecture from which audio narratives are commonly deployed to instill a sense of presence and absence investigating issues of ill-perceived relations and mis-diagnosed limitations between a subject and her environment. Recent work explores issues of subjectivity, agency and community through, for example, proposed forms of alternative living and utopian communities.
My work has been exhibited at the Skissernas Museum and Wanås Foundation in Sweden, Sculpture Center, Apex Art, P.S.1 Clocktower Gallery, Open Source, and White Columns in New York, Wesleyan University's Zilkha Gallery, and venues in Dublin, Brussels and Turin. I have been awarded an Art Matters grant, a Trans-Canada Fellowship and am a two-time New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship recipient. Residency awards include P.S. 1 MoMA; MacDowell Colony; Cité des Arts; and the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. My work has been included in the publications Art Forum, Bomb Magazine, Zing Magazine, New York Times, and Art News.
I completed the Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Study Program, received a MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. I have taught at the Malmö Art Academy and I currently teach at Parsons The New School in New York, and The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
