Robel Temesgen

Dialoguing the Social
TLC and Moderna Museet are proud to present Robel Temesgen, current iaspis studio grant holder.

24th of May
16:00
Moderna Museet

Robel Temesgen, whose wide ranging practice encompasses: painting, performance, conversation, installation and hand written newspapers, will present his latest projects involving social engagement. Under the title ‘Dialoguing the Social’, Temesgen will relate the connections between his artistic strategies and the existing social, political and economic context in Ethiopia. Among other topics, he will introduce ‘wax and gold’, a traditional literary approach used to express double-meaning, and an important basis for his participatory practice. The gold (the core message) is covered with the wax (the apparent message). This tactic is employed alongside strategic engagement in a practice that ranges from one day events, collaborative workshops to ongoing projects. The talk will be followed by a Q&A with the audience.

Robel Temesgen (b. 1987, Ethiopia) received MFA in Contemporary Art from Tromsø Academy of Contemporary Art and Creative Writing, University of Tromsø, Norway in 2015 and a BFA in Painting from ASFAD, Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia in 2010. His practice focuses on painting and encompasses elements of performance, installation, video and collaborative projects. Since 2010, Temesgen is a Lecturer at the Department of Painting, Alle School of Fine Arts and Design, Addis Ababa University. His work has been exhibited in Ethiopia and internationally.
