I Cannot Remember Where, but I Have Seen All This Before – Amr Hatem

In I Cannot Remember Where, but I Have Seen All This Before, forms repeat, meet, overlap and separate. Across a series of large-scale works, they return in different configurations, appearing at once familiar and difficult to name.

Working with graphite, charcoal and gum arabic, Hatem builds the surfaces through repetition and accumulation. Forms emerge through layers of graphite, charcoal, dust and pressure, while the spaces between them become equally present.

The works move between drawing, image and sign, somewhere between what is there and what is still taking shape.

Amr Hatem is a visual artist based in Copenhagen. His practice revolves around storytelling, disappearance, memory, archives, gestures, and affects shaped by experiences of displacement. He is interested in the dynamics of remembering and forgetting, particularly in how archival materials both tell and hide stories, and how bodies remember through gestures and movements. Hatem studied Fine Arts at Damascus University, where he received his BFA in 2010. He later attended the Maumaus Independent Study Programme in Lisbon (2019) and completed an MFA at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Conceptual and Contextual Practices, in 2020.

I Cannot Remember Where, but I Have Seen All This Before is his MFA graduation exhibition at Malmö Art Academy.
