Workshops at Malmö Art Academy

Workshops

The academy offers well-equipped workshops for wood, metal, plaster, plastic, clay, concrete, lens based media; film, video, digital and analog photography, digital image processing, 3D printing and animation. The workshops are located in Båghallarna, Föraregatan 4 and at Dimman, Bergsgatan 20 and are usually staffed week days, 8 a.m-4 p.m.

Workshop for metal, mouldmaking and plastic
Technicians in charge are Ariel Alaniz and Mathias Kristersson. The workshop is fully equipped for work with ceramics, plaster, plastic and metal. There is also a plastics workshop for polyester casting and fiberglass laminating and workshop for mould making in clay, plaster, alginate, wax, silicone. The metal and plastic workshop are open week days 8 pm-4 am

Wood Workshop and Wood Mounting
Technicians in charge are Ariel Alaniz and Mathias Kristersson. The workshop is fully equipped with stationary machinery and equipment for working with wood. Additional handheld machines and special tools can be borrowed at the Equipment Room. Students can also provide basic material such as MDF 6 and 12 mm at cost price. The wood workshop is open week days 8 pm-4 am

Photo Lab
Technician in charge is Kristian Nordström Kimbré. The two labs are equipped for developing and printing of black and white photography. For printing of color copies there is a professional Epson printer.

Photo/Video Studio
Responsible technician is Kristian Nordström Kimbré. The studio is fully equipped with various backdrops, greenscreens, studio lights, bouncers, studio flash units and more.

Project Studios
In order for the students to test out their projects in large-scale Malmö Art Academy have three project studios located in Båghallarna. It is possible for the students to apply for a project studio twice a year. The students will have to write a detailed project description, and senior lecturer Per Olof Persson is the responsible teacher who distributes the studios after evaluation of the applications. 

Equipment Room
The equipment room contains technical equipment which students, teachers and staff can borrow. For individual work at school, courses and exhibitions.
About 1600 items in the categories Photo, Video, Film, Sound, Light, Textile and various tools. It is open Monday, Wednesday and Thursday 09:00-10:30. It is possible to make equipment-reservations on the booking list outside the equipment room. The loaning periods are Monday to Thursday, Wednesday to Monday or Thursday to Wednesday, or by appointment. Students pay a deposition fee of 600 SEK in order to open an account for making loans.

Dimman, Bergsgatan 20

Computer room
Responsible technician is Joakim Sima. In addition to a number of workstations with updated software for working with digital media and photos, there is also an Imacon scanner, two Epson flatbed scanners and a large format printer (Epson Surecolor P8000).

Sound Equipment
Technician in charge is Joakim Sima. Videoediting room 1 is expanded with digital and analog equipment and sound editing software; Logic Pro, ProTools, Ableton, Reaper64, Native Instruments software synthesizers and MAX/MSP.

Video Editing
Technician in charge is Sophie Ljungblom. We have four studios with 5 fully equipped Mac computers for work with video editing. The workstations are installed with up-to-date software for editing, color grading and other postproduction of video. Da Vinci Resolve Studio, the full Adobe CC package including Adobe Premiere, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Media Encoder, Photoshop and many more. Also  Autodesk Creation Suite with software such as Maya and Mudbox. Facilities for digitizing DV, DVCAM and HDV, VHS, SVHS. Also DVD, BluRay burners.

3D print 
Using the 3D printers, Makerbot Z18 and Creality CR-S5, students can print objects at sizes up to 305 x 305 x 457 mm with a biodegradable PLA material. Tutoring and guidance in 3D scanning and printing is provided by Junior Lecturer Youngjae Lih.

Printers/Copy Machines
There is a printer/copy machine at Dimman, Mazetti and Båghallarna where students and staff can print, copy or scan material. Information about using the machines can be found at http://www.print.lu.se/papercut/.

Screen Workshop
Students at KHM have the opportunity to work at KKV Grafik which is a fully equipped workshop for graphic printing methods. Work is done during the day or by appointment. Booking are made in advance.

 

Malmö Art Academy (KHM) has an agreement with KKV Monumental which provides MFA2 students with access to KKV Monumental’s workshops as necessary. The access is based on your mastery of the relevant technology and the equipment available at KKV Monumental, for which the academy signs off and takes responsibility. KKV Monumental can offer training by agreement with KHM. You are insured through KHM.

Before you can start working at KKV Monumental, you must obtain approval from both KHM and KKV. Technicians Ariel Alaniz or Mathias Kristersson at KHM must certify that you have mastered the relevant technology and the equipment available. The daily cost for work at KKV Monumental is paid for by KHM according to contracted prices. You pay a deposit of SEK 700 and sign for the keys, which are your personal responsibility.

Students at KHM also have the opportunity to work at KKV Grafik, which is a fully equipped workshop for graphic printing methods. Members are expected to be able to work independently in the collective workshop. Support and teaching can be offered by agreement between KKV Grafik and KHM. Contact technicians Ariel Alaniz or Mathias Kristersson if you are curious about KKV Grafik. Work takes place during daytime or by agreement. The printing tables must be booked in advance. KKV Grafik makes basic material available by continuous invoicing to KHM, while specialist material is paid for/brought in by you. Boxes for personal material/protective clothing are available for use during ongoing projects. Codes that are provided to access the building are not to be passed on to third parties. You are insured through KHM.

NOTE: Project studios and photo studios should be restored and cleaned after use!

General rules

  • No smoking anywhere in the academy buildings.

  • No furred animals are allowed on the premises (due to allergies.
  • No eating or drinking by the computers or in the library.
  • Parties are not allowed in the premises of Malmö Art Academy unless they are authorised by the management.
  • No overnight stay is allowed at the academy. The fire brigade does not expect there to be people sleeping in the building and they will not search the building in case of fire.
  • Due to fire safety you are not allowed toblock emergency exits or store works or materials all over the building.
  • We do not have access to any parking spots at Malmö Art Academy. If you need to leave material at Båghallarna you can drive in and leave the material and then you need to park the car elsewhere.
  • School computers may not be used in an illegal manner.
