Ekon från den andra stranden (Echoes from the other shore) - Karolina Bergman Engman
On a ferry between Sweden and Estonia, silhouettes of passengers are searching for a past as they travel across the Baltic Sea. Flashes of light appear as images of memory in the ferry’s interior, while passengers are waiting to reach land. Left at the endless sea, you belong somewhere and nowhere.
In 1990, the ferry connection between Sweden and Estonia was established, becoming the first ferry between Estonia and The Free World in half a century. The line opened up new collaborations between the countries, as Estonia was adapting to its new identity as a free state. Simultaneously, the ferry made it possible for Estonian born people to travel back to their homeland. Passengers travel side-by-side in a fluid imaginary world with Tax-Free shops, Jack Vegas slot machines and dining options onboard. Some try to navigate a Capitalist system that has been normalized in the west outside the Iron Curtain, and some look for a return to the past. Today it is still a well-traveled connection for tourists and Swedish citizens with Estonian roots.
Ekon från den andra stranden (Echoes from the other shore) is an exhibition and short film with the same title that reflects on questions about belonging and identity - speaking to a feeling of limbo, of being placed between two places they call home.
A warm welcome and enjoy the journey,
Karolina
