MFA Exhibition; Carina Emery
Spiral Organs revolves around hearing aids as devices that capture, filter and amplify sound and speech.
It deals with questions of how intimacy is formed or potentially stolen, reflecting on notions like eavesdropping as an intentional transgression of set boundaries: it is intimacy by theft, as information is not given by the sender but taken from the receiver.
Whispering something into someone’s ear is a type of movement opposite to that of eavesdropping: instead of pressing the ear to the voice, the voice is pressed to the ear, and the ear cannot close or turn away. Intimacy is imposed, and through the meeting of mouth and ear it is almost as if someone is trying to enter the head through the ear canal, and thus become the inner voice of the other.
