The phantom limb is a fictional extension - a non existent carnal continuation. Fabricated and yet effective, the limb is less than the body that actually occupies space, and yet more than a mere specter. As real and mental spaces collapse, matter extends into the virtual. The limb gets trapped in a space no longer aligned with the present – namely the past. The prototype works in the opposite direction - as a representation of something that does not exist yet; a prophecy waiting to be fulfilled. If this is flipped around, so that the past and the future swapped places, the prototype would be like a fossil, a remnant of something once existing. In turn, the phantom limb would be a fictional extremity trapped in the future. The pain would not emanate from something lost, but from something to come. As a premonition of something slowly transcending into this afterlife of the present.
