Putting Deleuze, Guattari, and Braidotti’s Nomadic Subjectivity to Work in Artist Practices and Pedagogy

Positioned within an analysis of Taiwanese-American artist Tehching Hsieh’s year-long durational performance “Cage Piece” (1978-79), this presentation examines the complex and often paradoxical, yet vital relationship between art and thought, which will be addressed through philosopher Rosi Braidotti’s concept of figuration as a cartographic tool for creating a nomadic subjectivity. It closely follows Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari’s intertwining concept of nomadism, particularly related to the contradictory interplay between smooth and striated spaces. Through this detailed analysis of the unique and radical example of Hsieh’s work—one which bears on the extreme limits of the subjectivity—this presentation concludes with an inquiry into how a nomadic mapping of figuration might provide complex tactics for artist practices, and by extension, how it creates the conditions for new paths of experimentation with subjectivity for art educators and students.
