During the first year students begin their advanced artistic work, with different types of teacher-led seminars and also a study trip. Just as on the Bachelor’s programme, students choose from a range of technical and theoretical courses, many of which are taught by internationally recognised artists. The academy also offers a variety of guest lectures and international collaborations.

In the second year students focus on their degree projects (60 credits), which includes writing an essay (approx. 10 pages) about their own artistic practice and presenting a solo exhibition at the academy’s gallery. Students who pass their degree project are awarded a Master of Fine Arts. Professors at Malmö Art Academy act as examiners for Master’s students, and an external examiner is always invited to participate in the assessment.

To be granted the courses in individual studio practice demands of you to have at least one (1) studio visit each semester with our professors and in addition also studio visits with our teachers and/or external tutors. Entry requirements

For admission to the Master’s programme in Fine Arts, you must have a Bachelor in Fine Arts or an equivalent qualification. An example of an equivalent qualification is three years of study on a five-year Master’s programme in which no Bachelor’s degree is awarded. A certificate of a completed Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts or the equivalent must be included in your application.

Language requirements

English (spoken and written). We don’t require an English test (as IELTS or TOEFL).

Tuition fees

Students who are citizens of countries outside the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland are generally required to pay application and tuition fees of SEK 200 000 (23 000 Euro) per year. 

Admission

Each academic year a maximum of 15 students are admitted to the two-year Master’s programme in Fine Arts. All applications are reviewed confidentially by an admissions committee composed of supervising professors of Fine Arts, senior lecturers, lecturers and student representatives. Shortlisted applicants are called to interviews in the spring, usually in April. The selection is based on an assessment of samples of artistic work, personal statements and interviews. The reasons behind the decision of the committee are not communicated and the decision cannot be appealed.  

Application

Applications to the Master's programme in Fine Arts are done in two steps. First on universityadmissions.se and then in the Malmö Art Academy application portal where work samples can be uploaded. Next application period is January 2024.
