Slide and sound installation
Hymns to Unknown Heroines, part III is the latest iteration of a multifaceted work. The starting point was an anonymous photographic archive from the 1920s that depicts a Scottish family over several years. Many of the photographs portray women engaged in recreational activities, portraying an undemanding lifestyle that can be contrasted to the violent battle that was being fought at the time for women’s right to vote. The photos are shown together with archive material from the suffragette movement, including texts, books, and objects.
The work, which was first shown in Copenhagen in 2013 (part I) and the following year in Malmö (part II), was extended in the second iteration with references to the Swedish suffrage movement and one of its key figures, Frigga Carlberg (1851–1925), a radical spokeswoman in the debate on gender equality who also had links with the controversial British suffragette movement. In 2015, part III was shown at Viborg Kunsthal, where Hasager additionally focused on the Danish women’s rights activist Elna Munch (1871–1945). Using Munch’s speeches from 1913 and 1918 as a point of departure, Hasager created a slide installation where fragments of the speeches were presented lyrically. They were accompanied by a sound piece composed on the basis of statistical figures number of female members of the Danish Parliament up until the latest election in 2015.
