Your education

As a student, you choose courses each semester from our range of courses. The courses are in the areas of artistic creation, theory, and technology. A semester should consist of both courses and your own artistic work.

Your programme should consist of approximately 50% courses and 50% independent artistic work, although the exact split may vary slightly depending on the individual needs of the student. This distribution of credits between courses and independent artistic work must be met over the entire study programme. Students are also expected to participate in the School's annual exhibition. All new students are also expected to show the works they submitted in connection with their application in our new student exhibition.

All students apply and are admitted to a certain number of courses, and receive an admission letter once the selection has been made. If for any reason you are unable to complete your participation in a course to which you have been admitted, or regret your choice, you must deregister. After the deadline, deregistration is no longer possible and all students must attend the courses they have been admitted to or lose credits.

Grading

Course grades are awarded on a scale of pass/fail and are mainly based on participation, tasks completed and attendance.

The course examiner is the person responsible for the training on the course, and the grade is reported when the course has been completed and all attendance recorded. The most common form of examination at Malmö Art Academy is participation (at least 80 per cent attendance), but other forms of examination also exist (e.g. written examinations). Students are entitled to re-examination, which normally takes the form of supplementary course assignments. The examiner decides the form of examination for each individual course. In general, at least 80% attendance is required for a passing grade, but in some cases students may be required to complete supplementary assignments to compensate for lack of attendance. Students who have missed too many classes should contact the course coordinator to discuss how supplementary work can be done. To obtain 100% attendance for a class, you must arrive on time and stay for the entire class. Please note! It is not allowed to ‘check in’ and then leave the class after a short while! Students who fail a course due to high absenteeism cannot replace the missing credits with their own artistic work.

In order to be assessed and graded, exchange students must have attended at least one course per term and at least one studio visit per month, either with the school's own teachers or with the external tutors.

Own artistic work

Malmö Art Academy has no departments, and no division of teaching into different artistic disciplines. Teaching consists mainly of individual supervision and the student's own artistic work. Students are offered several opportunities to meet a large number of different teachers, both the Academy's own staff and external guest tutors, to receive individual guidance. The studio visits take place on the students' own initiative, in accordance with their own free choice. It is therefore important that students plan their studio visits carefully before each term.

To receive credits for the courses in own artistic work, students must have participated in at least two studio visits per semester, at which either the Academy's own staff or an external supervisor was present. Note that a passing grade requires participation in at least one studio visit with one of the professors at the Academy.

Studio visits are one of the most important pedagogical tools at the Royal Institute of Art, and therefore constitute a compulsory element for obtaining a passing grade in the courses in own artistic work. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that you sign up for and participate in regular studio visits with the Academy's teachers. At the beginning of each academic year, all returning students will have a one-on-one meeting with the Rector of the Academy and one of the professors to discuss their plans.

Grades in the student's own artistic work are mainly based on the teachers' assessments from the studio visits. To ensure that the grades are fair and in accordance with the programme syllabus, studio visits are monitored by reviewing the studio visit lists and reports from the teachers. Each term, the College meets to evaluate the progress of individual students, and to discuss the students' work with a view to exploring how teachers can best promote their further development. It is the responsibility of the tutor to notify students in advance if they are at risk of failing.

The Art Academy's teachers usually have fully booked schedules, which means that it is very important that you as a student keep the agreed times and are actually on site when they have booked studio visits. Students who for some reason cannot make a booked studio visit should therefore notify the teacher responsible by either removing their name from the list or contacting the administration.
