30th Anniversary: Rosa Barba - “The Observer Problem”

  “The Observer Problem” is a cross-disciplinary research project that takes this shared challenge as its starting point. Led by artist Rosa Barba and physicist Puneet Murthy, it brings together quantum optics and cinematic installation to explore observation as both a physical process and an experiential event. The project does not aim to simply illustrate quantum mechanics through art, nor to aestheticize scientific concepts. Instead, it proposes a co-investigation: on one side, developing new imaginative frameworks for thinking about the quantum world; on the other, embedding real quantum experiments - such as single-photon interferometry - into artistic and architectural environments where they can be encountered as both scientific phenomena and lived, perceptual experiences. 

Rosa Barba engages within the medium of film through a sculptural approach. In her works, Barba creates installations and site-specific interventions to analyze the ways film articulates space, placing the work and the viewer in a new relationship.
