Pendang - Cornelia Hermansson
Cornelia Hermansson MFA exhibition, Malmö Art Academy
”In an age of information overload, Cornelia chooses to pause and narrow down. She processes large color fields with small brushes – perhaps to buy more time? I imagine a painting that begins with a word or shape, and is then thoroughly investigated, turned inside out on the canvas, to the point of becoming peculiar. It is an exploration with few ingredients to get to the heart of a question.
I imagine the process as a dialogue between Cornelia and the painting. A thought is tested, met with a counter question, and slowly but surely a relationship is formed. However, the relationship is far from problem-free. Cornelia chooses conflicting materials: fat oil paint on dry cotton canvas, muddy and intense colours. But it is precisely in these collisions that tension arises.”

”Pendang, from French pendant [counterpart] and pendre [to hang], freely translates to companion piece and describes how something, an object or a phenomenon, is not separate. Instead there is a compatible other part, a parallel, a mirror image, a twin piece. In the exhibition, several of my paintings approach forms where the structure of being two characterizes the image, hence Pendang.”
